When an artist begins her professional career it is as if she is discovering herself for the first time. How was that awakening to art for Alicia Czerniak?
I’ve been painting forever, since my early childhood, since I could hold a pencil. I was drawing people, flowers and dancers, women in costumes from bygone eras. It should come to me from karmic memory because I have never seen the pictures of these times. I was only 6 years old, in these times there was not so much access to images, no internet and no TV ….
This discovery will be part of other pictorial and even spiritual influences. What would you say about those beginnings?
At the age of 14 I started my art studies, first five years at the School of Fine Arts in Wroclaw, and then I moved to the city of Lodz to further my studies at the Higher Academy of Fine Arts for another six years. I obtained the degree of Bachelor of Arts with specialization in various subjects: painting, fashion design and graphic arts… With too many “studies” comes the time of “unlearning”, freeing oneself from what has been learned and really start to create and discover oneself… This, yes, can be called «awakening to Art».
Your artistic beginnings led you to a certain path at the beginning and then to an evolution, could you describe those origins and your concepts of art in the early years until you reached your magnificent evolution in which your works seem more alive than ever?
The constant restlessness to know the world will lead me to travel to many countries and soon I settled in Paris … I lived in the house located in a picturesque corner of Montmartre next to the old atelier of Pablo Picasso (Bateau-Lavoir) …
Behind each new work, there is undoubtedly a project, a new thought that is translated into shapes and colors. I would like you to tell us about this very personalized way of working, especially in recent years.
I have lived in Paris for several years. In this period I developed my own style, creating a series entitled “Encounters in Space”; magical, dreamlike, cosmic surrealism … I continued with this style for many years, even when I later settled in Spain.
Alicia Czerniak has changed not only in her way of conceiving art, but also as a person. Of your former acquaintances, mostly from the artistic world, but also celebrities such as Antonio the Dancer, Gunilla Von Bismarck, Princesses and Sheiks, what would you highlight the most and what memories do you have of those special encounters?
During my long artistic career, I have met many personalities of the first magnitude in all fields, from whom I have received important commissions, especially portraits, where I was able to demonstrate my mastery of realistic painting and drawing. In 2009 I was invited to participate in the Exhibition of the best portrait painters of Europe in Berlin.
Among my portraits are Don Jaime de Mora y Aragón, brother of Queen Fabiola of Belgium; of Sheikh Mohamed Ashmawi and his family; of the President of Congo Brazzaville, Don Denis Sassou and his family; of King Fahd of Saudi Arabia; of my dear friend Antonio el Bailarín, among others.
The highlight of this period was my exhibition at the Museum of Mexico City, which was personally inaugurated by the then governor of Mexico, Carlos Hank Gonzalez, as well as several ministers and other high-ranking government officials. It was also widely covered by all the media: press and many TV channels. I did not expect this recognition and this great media resonance… I did not expect it…
Time has passed and those who knew your first works have seen an important change. Are they still your clients or has this new way of interpreting art changed the profile of your buyers?
The clients have changed, but I have changed more and, therefore, the way I create and express myself through painting.
Personally, I am passionate about the new spirituality that is now reflected in your paintings, they are full of magnificent light and intensity and promise a splendid future. How do you see now that beauty that you have transmitted to your work and what do you think will be its future from your point of view?
My personality, always eager for knowledge, took me back to the USA in 1997 to undertake studies at Summit University of Louisiana, where I obtained a Master of Science degree in Transpersonal Psychology. My extensive studies in the field of Metaphysics, as well as my own research, led me to write and publish several of my own works on this subject: “Metaphysics and Emotional Health”, “Chasing flows”, “The Incalculable Power of Emotions” and others. These studies are naturally reflected in my life and in my painting. It can be called awakening to Art and awakening to Life.
I leave space between the lines for you to give us a little piece of your soul to say goodbye.
My painting has changed, from a “magical surrealism” style to a “cosmic abstract” style which exudes freedom and spirituality. The freedom of a vigorous and gestural brushstroke, but representative at the same time.
The work communicates and expresses this idea of openness towards the cosmic with an energy that transcends the borders of the canvas. My paintings can’t be understood and analyzed with the mind. You have to feel them! Feel their energy, feel the freedom of their soul!
